It’s known by many that Arsene Wenger is after a top central defender to add to his squad this January and apparently he’s turning to Dutch U21 international Virgil van Dijk again as a potential incoming.
Now 23, van Dijk has long been linked to Arsenal and other Premier League clubs such as Sunderland and Everton but no avail.
It has been reported by The Telegraph that fresh enquiries were made last week about the player, even though Ronny Deila (the Celtic boss) has insisted that his centre back is going nowhere in January. These enquiries were not made directly with Celtic.
These enquiries could have been to sound out whether Arsenal is a potential end destination for the client, or whether or not Wenger should finally cross him off his wanted list.
Van Dijk played 62 times, scoring 7, for Gronigen in Holland before he made the switch to Scotland in 2013 with Celtic, where he has gone on to make 53 appearance, scoring 7.
It is said the fee would be circa £8million.
Winston Reid, the Kiwi who is in the final year of his contract at West Ham and has indicated that he will not sign a new deal, has also strongly been linked with a £4 m move.
Tyrone Mings of Ipswich is also on Wenger’s list. Interest in St Etienne’s Loic Perrin has cooled after the asking price was seen to be too high by the Arsenal board.
