According to French newspaper L’Equipe, Arsenal have dropped their interest in long-standing target Loic Perrin, having now turned their attention to Brazilian center back Gabriel Paulista.
While Perrin to the Gunners has looked increasingly likely in recent weeks, Arsene Wenger has seemingly cooled his interest in the Saint Etienne captain. Because of this, the door has been opened for Paulista to join the North London club. The 24 year old has raised eyebrows this season for Villarreal, helping his side to 6th place in La Liga and ensuring that “The Yellow Submarine” only concede an impressive 44 goals so far.
Paulista has started 16 matches this season, cementing himself as a regular in the Villarreal defense. Arsenal may experience work permit issues with the Brazilian however, as he’s never represented his country on the international stage at at any level, and doesn’t posses a European passport. Regardless, he represents a solid potential addition, who can shore up the defensive depth and push Per Mertesacker for a starting role.
With winger Joel Campbell a reported Villarreal target, a swap deal could even be on the cards for the Gunners. Arsene Wenger has stated numerous times that his main priority this winter is a center back, with numerous defenders reportedly on his radar. Gabriel Paulista could very well be his man.
