Former Liverpool midfielder turned football pundit Danny Murphy has urged Arsenal to appoint Rafa Benitez this summer.
Speaking on TalkSPORT, as reported by the Daily Star, Murphy says Benitez would be the ideal candidate for the job.
He [Benitez] is exactly what Arsenal need, I heard Paul Merson saying Arsenal fans want a certain style of play and want to see a team play expansive football but they do that now and they get murdered. I only worked with him [Benitez] briefly, but he was bang on it.
It was Benitez who orchestrated Newcastle’s 2-1 win over the Gunners on Sunday at St James’ Park.
The Spaniard has largely overachieved with Newcastle this season, with many predicting the Magpies to be immediately relegated back to the Championship at the start of the season.
Sunday’s victory over the Gunners all-but secured their place in the top flight with a top 10 finish not out of the question.
The Gunners now face a fight to finish sixth with Burnley hot on their tails.
Questions are still being raised about the future of Arsene Wenger, who will address his situation at the end of the season.
