Arsenal’s defensive frailties have been well publicised throughout the season.
The Gunners undoubtedly possess an abundance of attacking quality and flair but the same simply cannot be said about their defensive options.
Irrespective of whether Arsene Wenger has deployed a four at the back system or a three at the back system, goals have been unnecessarily leaked and it goes without saying that the Gunners should be aiming to recruit a new centre-back or two in the summer transfer window.
Arsenal have been linked with a number of defenders in recent times but none of these links have come to fruition. They must sign a top centre-back if they are to realise their potential and fight up at the top once again after some years of mediocrity.
So, just which defenders should Arsenal look to target when the summer transfer window comes around?
We’ve taken a look at six potential options.
Stefan de Vrij
De Vrij is leaving Lazio at the end of the season and a number of clubs will be fighting for his signature. He’d be a top signing for Arsenal given his technical quality, his intelligence with reading the game along with his aerial prowess.
Jose Gimenez
Gimenez appears to be set for an exit from Atletico Madrid at the end of the season and he’d be a worthwhile addition for Arsenal. He is young, composed on the ball and has the tenacity required to become a top central defender.
Daniele Rugani
Arsenal are understood to already be interested in Rugani and it isn’t hard to see why. The Juventus defender has a bright future and has all the makings of an impressive centre-back. He reads the game well and is a good passer of the ball.
Jonathan Tah
Tah has been tipped for big things for some time now and would be a welcome addition at Arsenal. He is strong, commanding and is a technically gifted defender.
Kalidou Koulibaly
Koulibaly has also been linked with a move to Arsenal recently and he’d certainly shore up the defence. He has been fantastic for Napoli in recent years, turning in consistently commanding performances.
Salif Sane
Sane has been causing quite the stir out in Bundesliga as he continues to turn in commanding displays from the back. He’s an underrated defender and has produced a number of impressive performances this season, showing off his physical prowess whilst enhancing his decision-making.
