Arsene Wenger has backed Arsenal attacker Alexis Sanchez to step up when it matters against Manchester City on Sunday.
As reported by the London Evening Standard, Wenger is not questioning the Chilean’s attitude after he failed to complete a summer move to the Etihad to reunite with his former manager Pep Guardiola.
I have no concerns [about his attitude]. I’m not suspicious about the performances or desire to win of a football player. When you’re a football player you have a social contract with the rest of the team.
I never question that. Once you don’t respect that it’s difficult to say you play football.
The former Barcelona winger was continuously linked with a move to Manchester City throughout the summer but the two sides could not agree on a deal.
Wenger was desperate to keep hold of the Sanchez and refused to sell, despite the player entering the final year of his contract.
City remain interested in the player and could sign him for free when his deal expires at the end of the season.
Sanchez is likely to be rested on Thursday night when the Gunners welcome Red Star Belgrade to the Emirates in the Europa League.
Manchester City are also in European action this week, they travel to Napoli on Wednesday night.
