Shakespeare: Mahrez could stay at Leicester

Leicester manager Craig Shakespeare says star player Riyad Mahrez could stay at the King Power, despite interest from Arsenal and Roma.

Roma have already had a bid of £20 million rejected for the Algerian international.

The want-away winger has made his desire to leave evident, and Arsenal have been long-term admirers of the player as Arsene Wenger looks to add quality to his squad ahead of another season searching for major titles.

The 26-year-old was a major force in driving Leicester City to claim the Premier League title in 2016 – one of the all-time great footballing stories – and was rewarded with the PFA Players’ and Fans’ Player of the Year, but has been heavily rumoured with an exit from the King Power Stadium ever since.

Speaking to the Leicester Mercury after a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Premier League Asia Trophy final, Foxes manager Craig Shakespeare was asked if anything could be read into Mahrez’s promising performance and if he could stay. He said:

I think ever since he has been here he has been involved in a lot.

What you read into it is that he is a good player. If we can find him and give him the time to express himself within the frame work, which is important, you will always see players of his ilk express themselves, as they had players who did that as well.

I am sure there is (a chance of him staying) because unless we get a suitable bid then he stays. He has a contract, it is as simple as that.
