Jens Lehmann
The German keeper was nominated for UEFA Club Goalkeeper of the Year for the 2005/06 season and went on to play until he ‘retired’ in 2010. He came out of retirement in March 2011 until the end of the season, when he rejoined Arsenal after an injury crisis at the club.
Lehmann became a coach for the Arsenal academy in 2013 and now mixes with commentating and public speaking.
Ashley Cole
The English defender left Arsenal for Chelsea at the end of that season, where he played for almost eight years until his contract expiration.
He moved to Italy to play for Roma but terminated his contract after just one year for an ‘unknown’ reason.
He moved to the USA in January 2016 to play for LA Galaxy, where he is today.
Sol Campbell
The goalscorer in the Champions League for Arsenal, Campbell left the club in June 2006 by mutual consent. He went on to play for Portsmouth and Notts County, before returning to Arsenal in November 2009 for the rest of the season.
He joined Newcastle in the July of 2010 until 2011, where he eventually retired in 2012. After football until the present day, Campbell has become increasingly vocal about his views on politics, meeting politicians such as Boris Johnson and showing his support in the recent EU referendum.
Emmanuel Eboue
Eboue carried on playing for the Gunners until the 2010/11 season, where he left to play for Turkish side Galatasaray for three years, before returning to the Premier League, joining Sunderland in March 2016 on a short-term deal, but the deal was cut even shorter when he received a one-year ban from all football related activity after failing to pay a former agent of his.
He was then released by Sunderland one month after he received the ban and it has not been known what he is doing this present day.
Kolo Toure
Toure left the club at the end of the 2008/09 season and joined Manchester City for £14 million and played for the Sky Blues for four years, including a title win in 2012, before moving to Merseyside to play for Liverpool.
He played for three years until he was released by manager Jurgen Klopp as Toure was not in Klopp’s plans at the club. He joined Celtic on a free transfer and has already won the league title in his first season at the Scottish club.
Robert Pires
Pires sadly left the club after speculation about his future at Arsenal at the end of the 2005/06 season, but eventually explained his departure was because of his lack of first team games for the Gunners.
He joined Villarreal on a free transfer, but he, unfortunately, sustained a long-term injury in his first few games for the Spanish side, which left him out for seven months. He played for Villarreal until 2010, after he was told that they would not be renewing his contract.
Pires returned to the Premier League with Aston Villa in November 2010 on a six-month contract. At the end of that season, he announced that he would like to stay at Villa, but was unfortunately released at the end of that season.
In July 2014, Pires joined FC Goa, an Indian side that had been newly created in the new Indian Super League. In March 2015, he was released from the club and announced his retirement from football one year later.
In 2016, Pires became a footballing coach and is working with the current Arsenal first team.
Freddie Ljungberg
The Swedish winger stayed at Arsenal until 2007, when he then went on to join West Ham on a four-year deal. Ljungberg left West Ham a few days after the beginning of the 2008/09 training camp and was linked with many different other careers outside of football, including modelling and even furniture designing.
After then going on to play for Seattle Sounders, Chicago Fire, Celtic and Shimizu S-Pulse, Ljungberg announced his retirement from football in August 2012 then, like Pires, joined the Indian Super League, but due to persistent back problems, he decided to end his contract after just four games and return to London.
In July 2016 it was confirmed that he would be joining the Arsenal academy coaching team, coaching the Arsenal’s Under-15s.
Alexander Hleb
The Belarusian carried on playing for Arsenal until July 2008, when he joined Barcelona for €15 million on a four-year contract. He went on to win the treble in just his first season at the club.
After loans to VfB Stuttgart, Birmingham City and VfL Wolfsburg, he cancelled his contract at Barcelona by mutual consent.
Hleb moved to Krylia Sovetov Samara in the 2012 January transfer window until the end of the season and then, after moves to BATE Borisov, Konyaspor and Genclerbirligi, Hleb returned to Krylia Sovetov Samara which is now his current club.
Cesc Fabregas
Fabregas stayed at Arsenal for five more years, gaining captaincy in the 2008/09 season, but left the club in the 2011/12 season to Barcelona for a reported fee of €29 million.
The Spaniard stayed in his home country until June 2014, when he signed for Chelsea for €33 million on a five-year contract and has played for the London club ever since.
Gilberto Silva
The Brazilian played for the Gunners until July 2008 when he joined the Greek club Panathinaikos for an undisclosed fee and helped his side reach the Champions League Round of 16 in his first season.
After moves to Gremio and Atletico Mineiro, Silva announced his retirement as a footballer in December 2015 and now works as an international consultant for clubs and players.
Thierry Henry
The Frenchman left the Gunners for Barcelona in 2007. After three successful seasons, the signing of Pedro meant that Henry was getting fewer games for Barca, and Henry left the Spanish club for the New York Red Bulls in America.
In 2012, Henry returned to Arsenal on a two-month loan deal. The Frenchman didn’t make many appearances for the Gunners, but his most memorable was when he came off the bench to score against Leeds in the FA cup third round, sending the Emirates to raptures.
When Henry returned to the USA, he carried on playing for two more years, where he eventually retired from football. In December 2014, he announced he would start to work for Sky Sports and become a pundit and has done this since.
Subs
Manuel Almunia – The Spanish goalkeeper carried on to play for Arsenal until 2012, when he joined Watford on a one-year deal. Despite signing a 12-month contract extension, he retired ion August 2014 when he picked up a rare heart condition during a medical with Italian side Cagliari.
Mathieu Flamini – The French defensive midfielder played for Arsenal until 2008, when he signed for AC Milan. He returned to Arsenal in 2012, and has played for the Gunners until the end of the 2015/16 season, when he joined Crystal Palace on a free transfer in September 2016.
Reyes – The Spanish forward joined Real Madrid at the end of the 2005/06 season, but moved from one Madrid team to another in just one year, moving to Atletico Madrid in July 2007. He stayed at the Spanish side until January 2012, when he joined Sevilla until June 2016, when he was released on the expiration of his contract. He moved to Espanyol, who Reyes currently plays for now.
