Arsenal centre forward – currently on loan at Championship side Hull City, Chuba Akpom, has admitted that he hopes to break into the first-team next season under Arsene Wenger.
The 20-year-old has spent the entirety of the current campaign on loan at Steve Bruce’s side, making 35 appearances and scoring on seven occasions.
Akpom is currently on international duty with the England under-21’s and ahead of his side’s UEFA European Championship qualifier against Switzerland, admitted, as reported by BT Sport, that he has been inspired by the growth of Arsenal teammate Alex Iwobi, who scored his first goal for the club last week after making his full Premier League debut for the north London side.
Of course [I’m inspired by Iwobi], It’s always good to see young British talent shining in the Premier League. Alex I grew up with, he’s like a brother to me, so I’m buzzing for him, I’m buzzing for his progress.
I just tell him that next season hopefully it’s me and him playing together, so this summer I’m going to work as hard as I can and pre-season do the best that I can.
The centre forward is expected to link back up with the Arsenal squad in the summer when his loan at Hull comes to an end, and revealed that he is looking forward to his return.
Yeah [I’ve been at Arsenal since I was six]. It’s been a long time and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. Arsenal is a good club and I’ve always wanted to play for the first-team, so I’m looking forward to going back there at the end of the season.
