BBC Sport’s Garth Crooks believes that Arsenal may have ‘uncovered the new Ian Wright’ in Alex Iwobi, after the Nigerian’s impressive display against Everton over the weekend.
The 19-year-old played the majority of the game against the Toffees on Saturday afternoon in his first ever Premier League start, scoring the second of the game after Danny Welbeck’s opener and tormenting the defence throughout.
Having started just days before that against Barcelona at the Camp Nou and holding his own, Iwobi could be set to become a regular in the first-team after Arsene Wenger confirmed he has no intentions of sending the player out on loan.
Crooks, speaking in his BBC Sport Team of the Week feature, claimed that he enjoyed the performance Iwobi put in and likened him to someone Arsenal supporters have fond memories of.
Iwobi’s week started in the Nou Camp and ended with his full Premier League debut and his first Premier League goal. Not bad for a 19-year-old. The link-up play between himself and Danny Welbeck was fabulous at times and there looks to be the beginning of a wonderful partnership.
What is even more remarkable is that it was only Iwobi’s 14th game for Arsenal in all competitions. To be showing that sort of confidence so early in your career speaks volumes for Arsene Wenger and his coaching staff. I think I’m going to keep my eye on this kid. Arsenal may have uncovered another Ian Wright.
The Nigerian has been subjected to interest from the England FA, who are urging him to switch allegiances and play for the nation he featured for at youth levels.
