Former Arsenal player Paul Merson has provided his prediction on the north London side’s meeting against Swansea City on Wednesday evening.
The Gunners struggled in their last Premier League fixture against Manchester United at Old Trafford, where a Marcus Rashford double put the home side ahead within half an hour, before Danny Welbeck pulled one back. Ander Herrera, however, put the home side 3-1 ahead early in the second half, and despite Mesut Ozil getting the visitors back in the game, it wasn’t enough and they lost ground on their opponents.
The pundit believes, as reported by Sky Sports in his weekly predictions column, that after the loss to United, the game against Swansea becomes ‘Arsenal’s biggest of the season’.
I agree with Graeme Souness that Arsenal were a joke on Sunday, but I believe they will beat Swansea at home. They simply have to win this because if they lose, then it’s almost goodnight for the title race. For that reason, I’d say this is probably the biggest game of the season so far for Arsenal. Swansea had a kick in the teeth after losing from 1-0 up at Spurs and they are probably the perfect team for Arsenal to play this week because they’re a nice team who won’t kick Arsenal off the pitch. Arsenal should win – but if they don’t score in the first 20 minutes, it could get very cagey.
The Gunners can move to within three points of Leicester this evening with a win, after the Foxes dropped points against West Bromwich Albion. Tottenham Hotspur, who Arsenal play on Saturday, can move top of the table on goal difference with a win.
