Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech could be awarded with the captaincy from next season, according to the Mirror.

Arsene Wenger is believed to be impressed by his leadership abilities, despite it being his first campaign with the club.

The Czech international has proven himself to be amongst the club’s greatest ever signings, having joined from Chelsea in the summer for a fee believed to be in the region of £10m.

Current club captain Mikel Arteta has had his fair share of injury issues and is by no means a regular first-team choice when available, with his contract set to expire in the summer and retirement reportedly impending.

Meanwhile, vice-captain Per Mertesacker, despite being a regular in the side for the majority of the season, is also ageing and has the likes of Gabriel Paulista and Calum Chambers to contend with, which could see his opportunities limited as of next season.

Cech, 33, has been identified by Wenger as the man who could take the armband on.
