In recent breaking news, it has been reported via Marca, that Nacho Monreal has agreed a two-year contract extension with Arsenal. The new deal will take his contract up to 2019 according to Spanish journalist Sergio Santome.

This announcement will come as welcome news to Arsenal fans. Signed in 2013 from Malaga, the Spanish fullback was once regarded as second choice behind Kieran Gibbs early on in his Arsenal career. After a spell at centre back, however, Monreal has taken the first team spot and never looked back.

Monreal is consistently one of Arsenal’s best performers. At 29-years-old, he is still in his prime and a two-year extension is an excellent piece of business by the club.

The extension also follows some reports linking Monreal with a move back to Spain, with clubs like Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid showing interest last summer.

It is understood that the extension has been signed, but Arsenal are deciding when to officially announce it.

The announcement of Monreal could also tie in with new contracts to Mesut Ozil and Jack Wilshere.
