Arsenal have moved a step closer to securing the signing of Basel midfielder Mohamed Elneny after the Egyptian midfielder passed his medical at the club ahead of his £7.3 million move from the Swiss giants.
Although Elneny is progressively nearing a move to the Gunners and has successfully completed his medical with the club, the 23-year-old must first be granted permission for his work permit.
Due to Elneny’s native Egypt being excluded from the top 50 of the FIFA World Rankings, it is likely that it will be necessary for Arsenal to appeal for their potential new signing’s work permit in the near future.
Despite the deal for Elneny becoming increasingly close by the day, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger remained coy on his side’s chances of signing the versatile midfielder in the January transfer window in a recent interview.

You know more than me (about Elneny’s move). Sadly we cannot announce anything at the moment. Nothing has been concluded.
Arsenal will hope that Elneny can provide them with the versatility and cover in the central midfield role that they have been missing as of late due to injuries to key men Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin.
