Wenger – Alexis unlikely to face City

Arsenal superstar Alexis Sanchez is ‘unlikely’ to be ready for his side’s crunch tie against Manchester City next Monday, according to Arsene Wenger’s medical team, the Frenchman has revealed.

Speaking after the 2-0 defeat of Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon, the long-serving Arsenal boss claimed that while Alexis will do everything he can to return to action and will return to training this week, it’s unlikely he’ll feature at the Emirates against Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

The closest to having a chance [of playing against Manchester City] is Alexis.

Medically, we think – my people think, he will not be ready but Alexis being Alexis, you never know…

It is a big game and we want to win at home and beat City at home. There are now eight days to prepare and it will be an interesting one but we can at least recover and prepare then.

The 26-year-old Chilean international pulled his hamstring at Carrow Road against Norwich City after a strenuous calendar year, in which he has featured more times than any other player in the Premier League over the last two seasons.

Despite Alexis’ absence, the Gunners have been in fine form, miraculously defeating Olympiacos in the UEFA Champions League to qualify for the round of 16, as well as Sunderland and most recently Remi Garde’s Villa side.

If Alexis doesn’t make it back for the game against City next Monday, he will certainly be in contention for the trip to St. Mary’s.
