Gunners set to lose out on hefty Champions League pay-day

According to reports in The Telegraph, Arsenal’s European failures will cost them £10m, at least. They would also be without a chance of cashing the £70m that any English club would be given if they won the Champions League.

Due to the constantly increasing investment into the UEFA Champions League from BT Sport mostly this year, the UEFA prize-fund is bigger than ever. This means that English clubs failure in the Champions League this yet could be the most costly in the competition’s history, if Arsenal are unable to make it out of their group.

Arsenal have already lost their first two group games and have yet to face Bayern Munich – arguably their toughest opponents in Group F. This means that the north London side could well fail to make it out of the group, which would net them a cool £8.84m. However, each win in the group stage is worth £1.11m.

That then means that the two defeats that Arsenal have suffered already have cost them £2.22m. However, they could still win £4.44m if they win their remaining four matches, which looks slightly unlikely at this point.

Arsenal have got out of the group stage in each of the last 15 Champions League campaigns and this would be a very bad year to end that trait. If Arsenal were to win the Champions League then they would have bagged an astounding £40.17m. Add on top of this the extra £30m that BT Sport will give to any English winner of the competition and you have yourself a cash prize of over £70m for any English side that were to win the Champions League.
