Arsenal record signing and World Cup winner Mesut Ozil has reportedly been subject of interest from Turkish giants Besiktas, according to the club’s former board member Erol Kaynar.
Speaking to Radyospor, Kaynar said that the club’s transfer committee chief Erdan Torunogullari arranged to meet with the Arsenal midfielder’s representatives, and during the meeting, enquired about the player’s availability.
“Erdal [Torunogullari] met with Mesut Ozil’s representatives last week and made an enquiry,” said Kaynar.
The World Cup winner cost the Gunners £42.4m back in 2013, and still has a number of years left on his current deal with the club, meaning he will unlikely leave for his native Turkey, but has admitted his admiration for Besiktas as a football club: “Besiktas have been performing extremely well this season.”
Despite this, the former Real Madrid superstar claimed last month that Fenerbahçe is the Turkish side he dreams of playing for later on in his career: “In the future I want to wear a Fenerbahçe shirt it would be an honour.
“Everyone knows I am a Fenerbahçe fan.”
Ozil’s former Real teammate Karim Benzema has been heavily linked with a move to north London throughout the summer and has reportedly had a bid of £48m accepted by the Spanish side, meaning the two could soon link up once again.
