Arsenal have confirmed that Jack Wilshere is set for a priod on the sidelines, after widespread reports of yet another injury to the 23-year-old’s ankle.
Wilshere injured his ankle in training prior to the Community Shield fixture on Sunday, but Arsene Wenger had previously claimed that the injury would keep the England international out for a few days, but with the story being a hairline fracture, Wilshere will face an extended period on the sidelines, a familiar situation for him.
The former Bolton loanee missed five months of last season with an ankle injury sustained against Manchester United, and has had a career thus far plagued by injury problem after injury problem, with the new campaign becoming the fifth season in a row that Wilshere has had problems related to his ankles.
Wenger spoke to Arsenal.com about the injury, and said: “The information you have heard about Jack Wilshere is right.
“I had a bad surprise because it is a hairline crack in his fibula that makes him a few weeks out.
“There is minimal damage apart from the bone damage – there is no damage at all apart from that. It was a collision in training and it was all completely accidental.”
Surgery may be required for the 23-year-old’s ankle, and if so, will be expected to miss even more action, but is currently expected to miss the opening month of Premier League football as well as England’s next two Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Switzerland.
