Arsenal have confirmed on their official Twitter account that Santi Cazorla has signed a new contract with the club – but no details have yet been given over the length by which his stay will be extended.
The Spanish midfielder is 30 years old but made the most appearances of the entire squad in 2014/15, playing 53 times in all competitions as his side defended the FA Cup and finished 3rd in the Premier League, one place ahead of Manchester United.
Santi arrived from Spanish side Malaga three years ago and has made just under 150 appearances for the club, scoring 27 goals. He was moved to a different midfield role to the traditional “number ten” which he had previously played – instead featuring as a deep-lying playmaker, a position which is ever-increasing in popularity.
The Spaniard will be looking to add to his goals tally in 2015/16 as everyone at the Emirates targets a first Premier League trophy since that won by “The Invincibles” side, which featured Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry.
Arsene Wenger was delighted to have tied the Spanish international midfielder down on a new deal, praising him as a “popular player” and remarking on his contributions to the team on the pitch as well as the experience he brings to the side – Cazorla was part of the Spain side which won the 2008 and 2012 European Championships.
The news comes as Arsenal prepare to face Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday afternoon and is sure to give the side a huge boost.
